David Cordani has led Cigna’s transformation from a traditional health insurer into a leading, global health service company, with a focus on helping people improve their health, well-being and sense of security.
Since becoming President and CEO in 2009, Cordani has successfully galvanized Cigna's more than 35,000 employees–in more than 30 countries–around a global product and service repositioning, guided by the company’s differentiating “Go Deep, Go Global, Go Individual” strategy.
Under Cordani’s leadership, Cigna has:
- Delivered nearly 17% compounded annual growth for both revenue and adjusted income from operations; the company’s 2012 results included 33% revenue growth compared to 2011.
- Successfully integrated a series of significant global acquisitions, including the $3.8 billion purchase of HealthSpring (now Cigna-HealthSpring), which gave Cigna one million new customer relationships in the growing seniors segment.
- Expanded the company’s operations in China and South Korea, while launching joint ventures in Turkey and India, giving Cigna strategic footholds in these high-growth markets.
Cordani’s career at Cigna spans more than 25 years; his leadership experiences cross critical disciplines of health care services, including distribution, marketing, clinical management, underwriting, finance and operations. Cordani began his career at Coopers & Lybrand.
He is highly involved in the community; he actively works with March of Dimes, The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, The Achilles International Freedom Team of Wounded Veterans and is a charter member of ChildObesity180.
Cordani is an accomplished triathlete, having competed in more than 125 triathlons. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M, and an MBA from the University of Hartford.
