New LEED-certified Office Building in Plano, TX Celebrates Green Design
In late 2009, Cigna consolidated employees and operations that had been scattered throughout the Plano, Texas metro area into a new 210,000 square foot building. Named Cigna Pointe, this facility meets LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards.
Cigna Pointe demonstrates how operational needs can be translated into sustainable results-a "green" challenge Cigna is committed to tackling. The new building now serves as both the regional center for Cigna and an example of the company's commitment to a healthier planet.
LEED Standards, Cigna Solutions
LEED standards provide a framework for using green building solutions. LEED-compliant buildings such as Cigna Pointe save energy, water and other resources, and reduce carbon dioxide emissions while improving the environment and helping to protect the health of the people who use them.
Among the features that contributed the Cigna Pointe's LEED certification:
- Extensive use of recycled materials
- Unique "bird-wing" rain capture roof system that carries rainwater into large, decorative cisterns
- East-West orientation that reduces direct sun exposure
Improving Health Inside and Out
An emphasis on health extends to the interior of Cigna Pointe. The building features a gym and extensive healthy cafeteria offerings. These and other wellness and lifestyle facilities add up to an efficient, progressive workplace. Cigna believes that this emphasis on healthy living and the well-being of its employees will enable them to better serve the many thousands of customers in the north Texas area who rely on them.
Green Surroundings
Cigna Pointe is sensitive to its natural setting. Special efforts were made during construction to retain the property's appearance. Existing oaks on the site were preserved: the three trees that did not survive the replanting were harvested and reused as outdoor furniture on the grounds. Branching walkways create a pedestrian-friendly environment. Cigna Pointe's large trees, wooded creek, jogging paths and picnic areas create an environment that fosters better health.
