Flexibility for Small Business Health Insurance Plans*
With Cigna health plans, small businesses* have big funding options. We have been helping smaller companies understand their health care expenses and save directly on claims costs for more than 25 years. We offer traditional and consumer-driven small business health plans.
Funding options for small businesses
Companies with fewer than 250 employees* can benefit from having a choice of health plan funding options. Cigna can help you achieve immediate—and sustainable—health benefit cost savings.
You need control, insights and savings. With the right plan, self-funding can help your small business save directly on claims costs. Cigna's self-funded plans offer:
- Detailed aggregate reports and insights into employee health care expenses
- The flexibility to make adjustments for utilization trends, depending on how your people tend to use their benefits
We have two self-funding options designed for small businesses. These programs are outfitted for the unique needs of smaller companies with fewer than 250 employees*. Many new Cigna clients chose our self-funding solutions. Some are even in a surplus cash flow position at the end of the plan year and had money left to use for future health costs.
Sometimes you want to know what you’ll owe each month. If your business is looking for a predictable self-funded health plan, you'll like the fixed monthly payments that come with a level-funding plan.
If actual claims are lower than expected at the end of the year, your business can receive a credit. You can use it to pay future health plan costs.
You can also pay as you go. If you need greater control of your small business group health plan design, and more insight into how health care dollars are being spent, graded funding may be a good fit for your business.
With a graded funding plan you pay for actual claims. If claims are lower than predicted, your business saves. If claims are higher than expected, stop-loss insurance can limit your company's financial exposure.
There are times when simple and predictable is preferred by employers. If you want the financial protection that comes from knowing your business' annual health care expenses, fully insured funding could be right for your small business.
Our fully insured option is easy to understand. Plus, there are no surprises because a set monthly premium takes the guesswork out of health benefit costs.
Consumer driven health plans
With Cigna consumer-directed health plans (CDHP) employees can choose between HSA, HRA and FSA-compatible plan options that can offer big savings. Clients that choose to offer these plans may see medical costs decrease. A Cigna study from 2013 showed that customers with CDHP plans1:
- Seek and receive more preventive care services in the first year
- Are more likely to use online cost and quality information tools
- Are two times more likely to complete a health assessment
- Are up to 25% more likely to work with a health coach to improve their health
- Have 8% lower pharmacy costs
