Cigna Medical Group gives back to our local communities

American Diabetes Association:
2011 marks the fifth year Cigna Medical Group has been the Presenting Sponsor of the American Diabetes Association's (ADA)"Step Out Walk to Fight Diabetes" premiere walking event. The ADA's efforts to cure and prevent diabetes and improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes align with CIGNA's mission - together we are improving and enhancing lives in the communities where we live and work.

In 2010 more than 325 employees and their family and friends joined more than 2,000 area residents to participate in two"Step Out" events taking place in the Phoenix metropolitan area. So far, through a variety of fundraising activities, employees have raised more than $200,000 for diabetes research, education and advocacy.

Cigna Medical Group will be the Presenting Sponsor for this event again in October 2011.

March of Dimes:
CIGNA has been a national sponsor of March of Dimes for the past 16 years. Locally, each Cigna Medical Group location selects a Team Leader, who is responsible for recruiting walkers and organizing fundraising efforts.

In April 2011, more than 285 CIGNA employees in Arizona participated in the campaign and raised more than $93,000. Over the past 16 years CIGNA, the CIGNA Foundation and employees of CIGNA and Cigna Medical Group have contributed over $25 million to the March of Dimes, with more than $1 million raised by Arizona employees.

CIGNA Summer Water Safety Program:
This summer marked the 20th year that CIGNA AZ and the City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department's Aquatic Section have partnered to make summers fun and safe for children.

The sponsorship offers free programs to educate children about water safety:

  • Itty Bitty Beach Party (ages six years or younger and their parents) are poolside parties that include water safety instruction, games, and contests.
  • Cub Club (ages seven to 10) is a fun way for children to learn basic first aid and water safety skills.
  • Discovery Guards (ages 10 to 13) is a step into more detailed water safety. Participants meet two times a week for six weeks. Activities include: an introduction to CPR, basic first aid training and an introduction to lifeguarding skills.
  • Junior Lifeguard Training (ages 13 to 15) provides the opportunity to develop leadership skills. First-year Junior Lifeguards will become certified in Community First Aid and Safety and CPR; second-year junior lifeguards will be certified water safety aides and work toward the goal of employment.
  • Lifeguard Academy (age 15) trains and certifies candidates in lifeguard training, first aid and CPR with AED, in addition to providing candidates a professional orientation to the position of lifeguard.

Approximately 60,000 children have participated in CIGNA Summer programs over the past 20 years. CIGNA and Cigna Medical Group employees have the opportunity to volunteer at the CIGNA Summer events. Each summer employees volunteer about 50 hours of time.

Additionally, for the past five years CIGNA Medicare Services and Cigna Medical Group have sponsored free senior water aerobics at City of Phoenix pools that has benefited more than 3,000 seniors throughout the Valley.

Food Drive with St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance:
CIGNA AZ and Cigna Medical Group employees have participated in an annual food drive with St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance, for the past 12 years. For five weeks each Fall, employees raise money and collect non-perishable food items in an effort to make a positive difference for Arizonans in need.

Each CIGNA and Cigna Medical Group location selects Team Captains who take on the responsibility of encouraging their colleagues to donate cans or money. Employees come up with creative activities to raise money, including bake sales, book sales and contests.

Over the past five years, employees have raised $117,462, collected 35,944 canned goods and volunteered many hours to assemble 2,342 food boxes for Arizonans in need over the full extent of the food drive campaign.

St. Mary's recognized CIGNA's campaign as a huge success, inviting us to share our fundraising "best practices" in their Horn of Plenty newsletter and with their national partner, Feeding America.

Other notable sponsorships and community events:
CIGNA HealthCare of Arizona and Cigna Medical Group employees also volunteered and supported community events organizations including: American Heart Association, United Way, American Cancer Society, UMOM New Day Center, Boys and Girls Club, Phoenix Children's Hospital, AZ Humane Society, Valley Kids Foundation and others.
