Cigna Medical Group Spotlight

Dr. Sudha Kamineni
Internal Medicine, Stapley Multi-Specialty Center, Mesa

What is your hometown?
I was born, raised, and went to school (through medical college) in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, India. My husband came to the US to get his Master of Pharmacy in New York and I joined him after I graduated from medical college.

Where did you attend Medical School?
I went to medical college in my hometown in India. I was the first female representative at my school. I enjoyed having a lot of interaction with my seniors and I made many friends at medical college. I completed my residency at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.

What brought you to Phoenix?
The weather is similar to that of India, where I grew up. After completing my residency in Pennsylvania where it was very cold, and I was tired of shoveling snow, I decided that I need to move to warmer temperatures. We already had friends living in Phoenix, so it made sense to look for a job here as well.

Do you have any areas of special interest?
I chose Internal Medicine because I had a lot of interest in Diabetes and Congestive Heart Failure. These are two illnesses that are closely related and share many morbidity factors. They are also diseases that affect many people around the world.

Why did you decide to work at CMG?
After we decided that we both would like to live in a warmer climate, I decided to apply at Cigna Medical Group. I came here for my interview then flew back to Philadelphia - no sooner did we get back to Philadelphia than CMG called and said they'd like me to start right away. I started in January 2001.

What has been your best experience working here?
I really enjoy the people I work with. We have a good team and I share the same values and ideas. I'm proud to say, that I have been with CMG for 11 years now.

What are some fun ways to keep healthy and active?
When I talk to my patients, I set myself as an example. I walk daily, rain or shine, at least 5 miles (whether outside or on the treadmill). I also like to hike and Zumba. I participate in all of the charity walks that Cigna sponsors. Walking is a simple thing that can promote good habits.
