Dr. Amjad Riaz, Internal Medicine
What is the name of your hometown?
I completed my medical school in Multan, Pakistan. After completing my medical degree, I moved to Buffalo, NY where I completed my Residency in Internal Medicine at the State University Program - Medical and Dental Consortium at SUNY Buffalo.
How did you end up in Arizona?
I decided to move to Arizona, because I was attracted to the nice sunny and warm weather where I can enjoy outdoor activities.
How did you choose your area of specialty?
I like to have a challenge and in Internal Medicine, you always find a challenge. Internal medicine is a broad specialty, you have to think about different aspects of human physiology and how they all relate to one another. There are a lot of pieces to the puzzle and I like finding the problems and then being able to help patients feel better.
Do you have any unique interests within your specialty?
Most of my patients are diabetics, have hypertension and high cholesterol. I have special interest in management of diabetes. I am also interested in heart health and all the things that keep my patients heart healthy, including managing high blood pressure and high cholesterol and thus preventing coronary artery disease. I have an NCQA certification for diabetes and delivery of cardiovascular /stroke care.
What made you decide to work for CMG?
I met a few of the physicians who worked at Cigna Medical Group and they really enjoyed the culture and working environment. They were very happy with the ancillary support they received and had only positive things to say about CMG. I knew that this would be a great opportunity for me as well - as soon as I heard of a physician opening I decided to apply.
Any special tips for our patients?
It's important for people to watch what they eat and try to limit sugar consumption as much as possible. Exercising regularly has many benefits, not only do you maintain a healthy weight, but it can also help cope with stress.
