CIGNA Disease Management Programs Deliver Cost Savings and Improvements in Health Care QualityPrograms cover the most costly and prevalent diseases facing population today CIGNA’s disease management programs have been helping members manage chronic illnesses for over a decade, addressing many of the most costly and prevalent diseases and conditions among a population. CIGNA offers disease management programs for members with asthma, diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), depression, congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease, weight complications, low back pain, and a group of ten targeted conditions. CIGNA’s disease management programs are delivering cost savings and improvements in health care quality. The program is one of the nation’s largest population-based disease management programs, serving over 1.3 million members. CIGNA uses sophisticated predictive modeling tools to help identify participants for the programs and then implements aggressive recruitment by phone and mail to enroll eligible participants. Members then work with specially trained nurses by phone to establish self-care plans that address issues such as medication compliance, biometric monitoring, lifestyle behaviors, diet, and exercise. CIGNA has a strong commitment to measurement of results and follows the guidelines from the DMAA and methods from Johns Hopkins University. The programs have been recognized for their excellence, with CIGNA having received the 2005 Health Plan/Managed Care Organization Disease Management Leadership Award from the Disease Management Association of America (DMAA) in 2005.
