HealthCare Frequently Asked QuestionsPrimary Care Physicians (PCP)
What is a primary care physician (PCP)? A primary care physician (PCP), is your first, or primary, source of medical care - your personal doctor. The PCP you choose coordinates your medical care, including checkups, referrals to specialists (if you participate in an Open Access plan, you do not need a referral to see a specialist), lab and x-ray services and hospital admissions. PCP-based care is an effective way to maintain better health: regular physician visits help build strong, secure doctor-patient relationships. When you enroll in a CIGNA HealthCare network plan, you choose a PCP from the CIGNA HealthCare network of independent physicians in your service area. You may not even need to switch doctors. Chances are good that your present physician already participates in the CIGNA HealthCare network. Simply Find a Doctor online or check your CIGNA HealthCare Provider Directory to see a listing of participating PCPs in your area. You can choose from doctors in the fields of Family Practice, General Practice, Internal Medicine or Pediatrics. If you're already a patient of a participating primary care physician, you may select him or her as your PCP with his or her approval and confirmation from Customer Service. Yes, you can change your PCP for any reason - if you move, if your family situation or medical needs change, or if you're just not happy with your choice. But changing PCPs often is not recommended. You and your doctor need time to get to know each other and develop a relationship with open communication. That's what helps your doctor to provide you with the most medically appropriate care. You can change doctors once a month. The change is effective on the first of the month following the date you notify us. For example, if you notify us June 15, the change will be effective July 1. Find a participating primary care physician conveniently with our online directory. Once you select a new PCP, call Member Services at the toll-free number on your CIGNA HealthCare ID card to verify the doctor you've chosen is accepting new patients. You can change your PCP with us over the telephone at that time or over the Internet from the Provider Directory detail page about that doctor. Simply click on the doctor's name and follow the step-by-step instructions. Can I choose my OB/GYN as my PCP? In some states, yes. Regulations are changing, and some states allow you to choose an OB/GYN as your primary care physician. But, you'll be glad to know CIGNA HealthCare plans are strong advocates in "open access" health care for women. You can visit your CIGNA HealthCare participating OB/GYN for covered obstetrical or gynecological services without a referral from your PCP. (Note: Some employer plans may differ. Check your own plan for details.) Can I choose a different PCP for each member of my family? Yes. Each covered family member can select his or her own PCP from our broad network of participating general and family practice physicians, internists and pediatricians. What if I need to see my PCP, and he or she isn't available? Contact the doctor your PCP designates to be "on call" in his or her absence. If you see the doctor on call, the health services you receive will be covered as usual under your plan. |
