Motivation for joining The Tour Most importantly is the challenge to reach and connect with people to encourage and inspire them to make a simple healthy change.  Less than a week after we finished the HAT last year, my sister-in-law from Amsterdam, NY had a conversation with a friend of hers who had met a group of riders in Washington, DC promoting health awareness on their journey to CT.  It goes to show that talking to one person can spread the message to several others.
Reasons for adopting an active lifestyle

I’ve been fortunate to have been raised in a healthy lifestyle. As a kid my family would bike, hike and run year round.  But along the way, like everyone else, I picked up bad habits.  My bad habit was drinking soda, which I let get out of control when I started work at CIGNA … three sodas a day during the week, sometimes four.  But on last year’s tour, the material I read about the sugar content of soda started to strike a nerve. It hit a breaking point when a co-worker greeted me at the finish ceremony with a cup filled with 6 tablespoons of sugar and said “drink up Tom”.  That’s when I said, “Enough! I’m going to stop.”  Almost a year later I have been soda-free.  Replaced the habit with water and I reward myself by spending the would-be soda money on iTunes.

Why a healthy lifestyle is important It’s important for me to live a healthy lifestyle so my children and their children will learn and follow the same healthy paths as I did.
One piece of advice to help others live a healthier life Taking a healthy step is only successful if it becomes part of your life’s routine.  Being consistent is the key factor in determining how you will benefit from the steps taken and if it will become part of who you are.
