Motivation for joining The Tour To show that an average-ability 50-year-old guy can take on this challenging event. I was very excited to hear that the event was open to a broader group of riders.
Reasons for adopting an active lifestyle Ten years ago, I had a Mitral Valve repair after routine visits to my doctor revealed a problem. The repair was good and effective, and I exercised during my recovery but fell into a pattern of being less active over the next several years.

A year and a half ago, my wife suggested I ride in the American Diabetes Association Tour de Cure bike ride. I started training for this event and was able to complete the ride. I lost 15 pounds, rediscovered an activity that I really enjoy, felt a great sense of accomplishment, and got "hooked" on the sport. I expect and hope to be able to continue to ride a bike for years, enjoying the sport, as it has a positive impact on my health.
Why a healthy lifestyle is important As I have aged, I have found it harder to control my weight and more likely that my doctor will add more medications to my regimen. As I have gotten more active in the past two years, I have found that the regular activity is helping me feel better, control my weight and minimize the need for medications.
One piece of advice to help others live a healthier life Find a physical activity that you enjoy and get into a habit of doing it on a regular basis. Keep it fun so that you will want to continue with it. If you have a medical condition, find out all you can about it so that you can understand what your doctor is telling you and so that you can participate in decisions about your treatment.
