Motivation for joining The Tour To educate the masses and spread the word about the importance of a healthy lifestyle and how to make it happen.
Reasons for adopting an active lifestyle In my 20s, a benign brain tumor was discovered that required surgery. The tumor was a type that was a slow grower and non-malignant, so I had time to whip myself into the best shape of my life prior to the 12 hour surgery. Fortunately, I had a very successful surgical outcome and post operative course which I believe was largely a result of my state of health and mind engendered by exercise and good nutrition.
Why a healthy lifestyle is important Health is our most important asset as individuals and as a society. Without good health, all other pursuits are moot... so why not optimize our health and advantage ourselves by keeping ourselves and our society in good health and maximize our experience and really live and enjoy life!
One piece of advice to help others live a healthier life It's pretty simple... keep weight normalized and be active...input equals output or calories consumed equal calories burned; we need about 1000-1500 cal/day to maintain our weight so if we are sedentary, like 75% of America, anything above that goes into fat storage; so the rule of thumb is decrease portion size, push back from the table early (it takes the brain 15 minutes to catch up with the stomach and register a feeling of fullness), eat a balanced diet, 5 fruits & vegetable servings a day keeps cancer and heart disease away, avoid simple carbohydrates and soda pop, take all opportunities to move your body by walking, biking, bending, stretching, standing versus sitting, use stairs rather than elevators, do weight bearing exercise, drink plenty of water, get 7-8 hours sleep a night, complete your Health Risk Assessment annually, and see your doctor once a year for appropriate preventive screenings and you will be healthy!!
