Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a worldwide public health problem that affects more than 19 million people in the U.S. The incidence and prevalence have doubled in the past 10 years and are expected to continue to rise steadily in the future1.
The National Kidney Foundation's Kidney Disease Outcome Quality Initiative (K/DOQI) clinical practice guidelines recommend estimating the level of glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) by employing prediction equations that incorporate serum creatinine measurements. The eGFR provides the best measure of the filtering capacity of the kidneys1.
To assist in earlier identification, classification, and management of CKD, Cigna strongly supports reporting the eGFR automatically when a serum creatinine is measured.
