For every 1,000 people who have a fecal occult blood test every year, 10 lives will be saved, with no serious complications. For every 1,000 people who have a flexible sigmoidoscopy every 5 years, 10 to 20 lives will be saved, and there will be less than 1 serious complication. For every 1,000 people who have a colonoscopy every 10 years, 30 to 40 lives will be saved, and 2 to 3 out of 1,000 will have a serious complication. Serious complications include perforated colon, major bleeding, or death.
