Conditions With Symptoms Similar to Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)

Many conditions can cause symptoms similar to those of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID).

Other problems with the reproductive organs that may cause symptoms similar to PID include:

• Ectopic pregnancy.
• Endometriosis.
• Uterine fibroids.
• Ruptured, swollen, or bleeding ovarian cyst.
• Twisting of a tube and ovary (torsion).
• Pain when an egg is released from an ovary during ovulation (mittelschmerz).
• Menstrual cramps.

Medical conditions not related to the reproductive organs that may also cause symptoms similar to PID include:

• Appendicitis.
• Digestive tract infection or inflammation (gastroenteritis).
• Gallbladder infection or inflammation (cholecystitis).
• Kidney stones (nephrolithiasis).
• Other digestive tract problems (ulcer, diverticulitis, irritable bowel syndrome).
• Pancreas infection or inflammation (pancreatitis).
