Graves' Ophthalmopathy

Picture of the eyes of a person who has Graves' ophthalmopathy

Graves' ophthalmopathy is a frequent complication of hyperthyroidism. People with Graves' ophthalmopathy may develop eye problems, including bulging, reddened eyes; sensitivity to light; and blurring or double vision. The amount of eye swelling is not related to the severity of the hyperthyroidism. This problem happens more often in people who smoke.
