If offered by your employer, CIGNAFlexAdvantage SM is a plan feature that gives members the freedom to switch between dental plans without waiting until open enrollment.
Members are not locked into a single dental plan for an entire year and can decide to switch between CIGNA dental plans (DHMO and DPPO/Dental Indemnity plans) on a monthly basis, without any hassles or questions.

Finding the care you need
Choose the dental plan that fits your needs at enrollment time, with the flexibility to change during the plan year if you want. No questions asked.
With CIGNA Dental Care (DHMO), choosing a dentist from our nationwide network may be your most convenient and cost-effective option.
- There's no deductible to meet, no annual dollar maximum, no claim forms to file and no waiting period for coverage.
- No co-payments are required for most diagnostic and preventive care.
- Each family member can choose his or her own network dentist.
- Second opinions are available at no charge when we arrange them.
With CIGNA Dental PPO – you can visit any licensed dentist in or out of our Preferred Provider network – the choice is yours.
- Your in-network out-of-pocket costs are lower than out-of-network.
- You don't have to file a claim form when you visit an in-network dentist.
- You don't need a referral to see a specialist.
With the CIGNA Traditional, our Dental Indemnity style plan – you can visit any licensed dentist or specialist whenever you need treatment – the choice is yours.
- Most diagnostic and preventive services are provided at low or no cost.
- After meeting your deductible or satisfying any waiting periods, you'll be reimbursed for all or part of your costs for covered procedures up to your plan's annual dollar maximum. You pay the difference up to the dentist's usual fees.
Switching between plans is easy. Just call Customer Service at 1.800.481.1213 by the 15th of any month and tell us the switch you'd like to make. The change will be effective the first of the following month.

How CIGNAFlex AdvantageSM might work for you
Choosing between DHMO and DPPO/Dental Indemnity is no longer an either/or proposition.
If you would like to save on out-of-pocket expenses and skip the deductibles, you can start with the DHMO. You'll select a network general dentist for you and each covered family member. If you require specialty care, your general dentist will refer you.
- By choosing a DHMO plan you can save an average of 62% to 83% 1 off dental costs when compared to not having dental insurance. 2 This average savings represents all procedures on our plans, including preventive services, most of which are provided at no or low charge.
If at some point during the year you would like greater access to dentists you can switch to the DPPO or Dental Indemnity plan offered through your employer. The choice is yours.
- With the DPPO, when you visit an in-network dentist, you can save an average of 35% off dental costs when compared to not having dental insurance.2
- If your employer offers the Dental Indemnity plan, or you go out-of-network in the DPPO, you can select any licensed dentist at any time. After meeting your deductible or satisfying any waiting periods, you'll be reimbursed for all or part of your costs for covered procedures up to your plan's annual dollar maximum. You pay the difference up to the dentist's usual fees.
