Health Insurance Enrollment Checklist

Choosing a health insurance plan is one of the most important decisions you’ll make. These steps will help you choose wisely.

Check Think about your health history and how things might change in the upcoming year. Do you go to the doctor a lot? Are you planning to have a baby? Thinking about the services you need will help you determine what type of coverage you should have.

Check Estimate how much you spend on health care costs each year, including doctor visits and prescriptions. It will help you identify the plan that makes the most sense for you.

Check Ask if a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) is available and determine if it’s right for you. A Flexible Spending Account lets you use tax-free money to help pay for medical expenses.

Check Use the online directory to see if your doctor is part of our national network. Some plans require you to use an in-network doctor, while others allow you to see any doctor. Keep in mind that even if your plan includes in-and out-of-network coverage, it usually costs less to see in-network doctors and go to in-network facilities.

Check Check the prescription drug list to see if your medications are covered.

Check Find out what other health care expenses are covered, such as emergency care, surgeries and laboratory tests.

Check Review your enrollment materials to see if your employer offers dental, vision or disability insurance. These are important coverages and can be more cost effective if you purchase them through an employer.

Check Look to see if you're offered incentives for taking certain actions to improve your health.

Check Complete the HSA Bank Application before the health plan's start date (if applicable).

Check Take a health assessment on myCignaplans.com (if applicable).

Check Call the pre-enrollment line phone number provided by your employer if you have additional questions.

For help understanding health care terms, you can look through our health care glossary.
