Behavioral Health Disability

Many people when depressed or anxious feel they are unable to work. An employee might struggle with going to work because of difficulty with peers or supervisors. Many people who are away from work for a period of time experience fear about returning to work.

The information in this section will help explain some of the fears about returning to work from a behavioral health disability the employee may be experiencing. This section also can guide the manager in accommodating an employee returning to work from a behavioral health disability.

If your company offers an Employee Assistance program, an EAP counselor can be a resource to the manager and staff in dealing with disability absences and sensitive issues, such as:
  • Confidentiality and privacy concerns
  • Workplace accommodation and modified or transitional work for the returning employee
  • Co-worker issues about increased workload due to the employee's disability
  • Becoming inappropriately involved in the employee's well being
