Cigna Medical Group Pediatric Departments Honored for Outstanding Immunization Levels

Phoenix - May 14, 2014 - Ninety percent of children cared for at six Cigna Medical Group (CMG) offices are up-to-date with their immunizations. As a result, CMG was recognized with the "Daniel T. Cloud Outstanding Practice Award" by The Arizona Partnership for Immunization (TAPI) at the 18th Annual Big Shots for Arizona Awards Ceremony.

"We are proud to receive the Daniel T. Cloud Outstanding Practice Award for the eleventh year," said Andrea Houfek, M.D., senior medical director for CMG. "We are dedicated to making sure the children we care for are protected from vaccine preventable diseases. TAPI's work in the community to educate the public about immunizations is so important, and we are excited to be recognized for such a prestigious award."

The award is given to medical offices with 90 percent immunization levels for the children they serve. CMG's Paradise Valley, Tempe and Westridge offices were awarded in the "Toddler" category. The Chandler, South Mountain and Stapley offices received the award for the "Teen" category. The Stapley office was also honored with a "Hot Shot Award" which recognizes exceptional efforts among individuals and practices who improved immunization levels statewide.

TAPI began recognizing outstanding practices and clinics with the Daniel T. Cloud Outstanding Practice Award in 2002. Dr. Cloud was a long-standing chair of the TAPI Steering Committee who passed away in 2010.

About The Arizona Partnership for Immunization
TAPI is a non-profit statewide coalition of over 400 members. TAPI was formed in response to the alarming fact that in 1993, only 43% of Arizona's two-year-olds were fully immunized against preventable childhood diseases like measles, mumps, polio and whooping cough. Through the efforts of TAPI's partners from both the public and private sectors, immunization coverage rates in Arizona have improved dramatically, with nearly three in four children fully immunized by age two. Unfortunately, the problem never ends. Each year in Arizona almost 90,000 babies are born, and none arrive immunized. For more information, visit www.whyimmunize.org.
