As part of the Cigna Connects Corporate Responsibility environmental initiatives, Cigna installed workplace electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at the Bloomfield company headquarters, in addition to a charging station at Cigna's Windsor, Conn. and Phoenix, Ariz. locations. Cigna also produced an EV Experience Day in Bloomfield, an educational event for Cigna employees providing a showcase of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles as well as helpful information on rebates, public charging grids and other ownership details.
"As a global health service leader, Cigna recognizes the important connection between environmental health and personal health. We're working to engage our 37,000 employees in environmentally sustainable practices, such as driving an electric vehicle. The installation of workplace charging stations at various Cigna U.S. locations, along with our EV Experience Day, are some of the ways Cigna is delivering on our Strategic Sustainability Performance Plan," said Mary Engvall, who leads Corporate Responsibility at Cigna.
In 2012, President Obama announced the EV Everywhere Grand Challenge, with the goal of enabling the United States to be the first country in the world to produce plug-in electric vehicles by 2022. As part of the EV Everywhere Challenge, the DOE launched the Workplace Charging Challenge in 2013, with the goal of increasing the number of American employers offering workplace charging to 500 by 2018.
