Through Able Engineering's wellness program, which includes a 10,000 square foot fitness center equipped with full-time health coaches, the company has saved $8,000 per employee and seen employee engagement increase to 65 percent over three years. The City of Phoenix has seen significant health improvement among its 14,000 employees through the Fit4Phoenix wellness program, which focuses on health coaching, biometric screenings and weight management. 76 percent of city employees rate their overall health as improved, 71 percent say they are more active and nearly half report losing 10 or more pounds.
"Cigna has always been a leader in driving health improvement in the workplace and we are committed to recognizing employers like Able Engineering and the City of Phoenix who are passionate about investing in a culture of health," said Edward Kim, president and general manager for Cigna in Arizona. "As the health care industry continues to evolve, it's important we work together to identify new ways to improve employee well-being and make health care more affordable."
"A successful wellness program starts with support from senior leaders," said Gregg Leach, chief financial officer for Able Engineering. "70 percent of our leaders are involved in wellness activities, whether it's taking fitness classes or participating in one of our wellness clubs. When employees see their leaders out there making healthy choices, they are inspired to do the same."
"When our employees are proactive about their health, the entire city benefits," said Mary Kyle, assistant human resources director for the City of Phoenix. "We hope that other businesses in Phoenix will make employee wellness a priority. If we work together, we can build a healthier community."
SmartPractice and City of Scottsdale were selected as runner-ups for the Cigna Well-Being Award. Both saw an increase in employees taking biometric screenings and health assessments. In fact, 99 percent of SmartPractice employees and 33 percent of City of Scottsdale employees completed a biometric screening and health assessment in the last year. For the City of Scottsdale, this was a 106 percent increase from the previous year.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), U.S. employers lose more than $225 billion each year in productivity due to employee health problems. Cigna created the Well-Being Award to recognize employer clients that have a positive impact on the health and well-being of their workforce.
Applicants were evaluated based on the core components of their wellness program, including the goals, implementation, incentives, leadership engagement and employee participation. All applications were reviewed and judged by an internal review committee from Cigna.
