SHAWNEE, Kansas - June 29, 2017 - Cigna (NYSE: CI) has recognized the City of Shawnee in the company's annual Cigna Well-Being Awards for demonstrating a strong commitment to improving the health and well-being of its employees through a workplace wellness program.
The City's program, known as Shape Up Shawnee, takes a holistic approach to health improvement by incorporating nutrition, exercise, prevention and healthy lifestyle education. Its focus areas include the physical, emotional, financial, career and social needs of its employees.
Notably, the City of Shawnee is a tobacco-free workplace and it offers health coaching to help people quit smoking. The City also offers seminars and individual wellness coaching for nutrition and healthy eating, its vending machines have healthier food choices, and there are employee fitness centers at City Hall, all three fire stations, the Justice Center and the Public Works Service Center.
In addition, the City has a bike-to-work program that provides incentives for employees who pedal to work instead of driving. Its on-site health enhancement coordinator offers personal and confidential health and wellness coaching and helps employees get the most out of their wellness benefits. The City also sponsors an employee assistance program (EAP) that can help people with short-term counseling for family relationships, depression and substance use. This resource can also be used for professional development and coaching; which is a valuable enhancement to a traditional EAP benefit.
The City uses incentives to drive engagement and employee participation in the wellness program. By accumulating wellness points for completing certain activities, employees become eligible for a cash “wellness bonus” at the end of the year. Employees are also eligible for a premium reduction if they have an annual physical or onsite screening, complete an online health risk assessment and complete a wellness coaching session.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), U.S. employers lose more than $225 billion each year in productivity due to employee health problems. Cigna created the Well-Being Awards to recognize employer clients that have a positive impact on the health and well-being of their workforce.
Applicants are evaluated based on the core components of their wellness program, including goals, implementation, incentives, leadership engagement, and employee participation. All applications are reviewed and judged by Cigna's multi-departmental review committee.
