BALTIMORE, MD., JUNE 11, 2018 – Cigna (NYSE:CI) Maryland PPO was named the top performing health plan according to the 2017 eValue8TM results released by the non-profit National Alliance of Healthcare Purchaser Coalitions (National Alliance) for 2017-2018. The survey is an annual health care purchasing and quality improvement assessment that measures and evaluates health plan performance.
Cigna Maryland achieved the National Benchmark Plan distinction, scoring the highest overall in critical areas of health plan performance eValue8 assesses how well plans do the following:
- Manage critical processes that control costs, reduce and eliminate waste;
- Ensure patient safety, close gaps in care and improve health and health care;
- Educate, engage and incent consumers to promote health and manage disease;
- Measure and pay providers; and,
- Other key areas such as: prevention, health promotion, adoption of health information technology, disease management, pharmaceutical management and behavioral health.

eValue8 was created by business coalitions and employers to define, measure and evaluate health plan performance to drive health care quality, administrative excellence and consumer satisfaction at cost-effective prices. As part of the process, plans and purchasers receive objective scores enabling comparison of plans against regional and national benchmarks and a roadmap for improvement. During face-to-face discussion of findings and roadmaps, plans learn how to align their strategies with purchaser expectations, to maximize the value of a purchaser’s health care investment and ultimately, improve health and quality of care.
Cigna participated in eValue8 for its PPO-type plans in eight markets: California, Colorado, Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia and Washington and was the best performing PPO among respondents in those markets. Additionally, Cigna Behavioral Health was identified as one of only four finalists for the 2017-2018 eValue8 innovation award for Cigna’s Community Support Program.
