BROWN BAG SPEAKER SERIES – LEARNING FROM THE BEST

One of the many things that motivates me is continuous learning. Here within the AEDP community, I have benefited from the many resources that give me such opportunities, one of which is Brown Bag Speaker Series.
As the name suggests, the Brown Bags are regular professional development events where senior finance leaders in the organization speak to program members about a variety of business and career-related topics in a relatively casual setting. Speakers are senior leaders from a wide range of business lines (Healthcare, Group and Disability, International, etc.) and functions (strategy, pricing, finance, M&A, underwriting, etc.), and they are often alumni of AEDP. Their topics range from an overview of the speakers’ organization and responsibilities to emerging challenges and trends in the marketplace, and from career advices to future rotational opportunities.
I sometime think of the Brown Bags as “TED Talks” within the actuarial community. For most of us who focus on contributing to our own team and business areas on the daily basis, it broadens our horizons by showcasing new initiatives and developments in other parts of Cigna, deepens our understanding on how actuaries add value to achieving the company’s growth strategy, motivates us to learn from and develop mentorships with the top actuarial talent, and inspires us to envision, design, and execute our own career paths to future leadership roles within the company.
Designed and organized by several volunteers within the actuarial community, the Brown Bags are constantly evolving to reflect the community’s need for continuous learning of new business developments as well as external environment trends. Here in the AEDP, learning is an ongoing and endless journey, and Brown Bags are an essential part of that journey.
