Growing up on a farm in England I had no idea that my career would ultimately take me all over the world. The bright lights and hustle and bustle of Hong Kong where I am currently based are about as far removed from the remote, windswept hills of North East England as you can get.
I joined Cigna straight from university as part of the Actuarial Executive Development Program in 2002. My first few years were based in Philadelphia where I worked in the Group Life and Disability division in a number of different roles, giving me exposure to many actuarial disciplines and providing a solid foundation for my career that I could build on in future years. Philly is the place I now think of as “home” which is hard to admit for a proud Brit living overseas.
In 2010 I became the Chief Actuary of Cigna Global Health Benefits business. This business provides Medical Insurance and other benefits to people who live and work outside of their country of citizenship, called Expatriates. This was my first taste of international business and while based in the US, gave me the opportunity to spend time in Europe and Asia.
In 2013 I became an expatriate myself when I moved to Hong Kong to lead the pricing function for Cigna International Markets where I have pricing oversight for 10 different businesses in countries across Asia and Europe. About a third of my time is spent on the road visiting these businesses and while keeping busy with work I do make the most of my travels, experiencing local cultures and finding time to explore, whether that is in the tunnels of the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, fly fishing in New Zealand or the Gateway of India in Mumbai to name but a few from the last 12 months.
Hong Kong has proved to be a great base for my family and personal vacations around the region have really opened our eyes to the world. Bali, Australia, Vietnam, Singapore, The Philippines, Thailand and Macau have all been ticked off in the last 2 years and we are looking forward to more adventures.
From both a personal and professional perspective I feel I have hugely benefited from my experiences with Cigna, especially in teaching me to embrace change and welcome new opportunities.
