Intern Event (Scavenger Hunt)

Ahhhhhhhhh, summertime in Philadelphia…Sun! Happy Hours! Barbeques! Baseball! Beer Gardens! No studying (mostly)! And of course…INTERNS!
Each summer in our Center City Philadelphia office, we have a group of interns come in for an 11 week internship. This year we wanted to make sure our interns got to see all that summertime in Philadelphia has to offer so a few full-time members of the AEDP set up a scavenger hunt to help them learn a bit more about the city. It was a great opportunity to get to know some of the AEDP full timers and see some great spots that they might not have known about otherwise. However, this was no ordinary scavenger hunt…
AEDP interns and full-timers both were put onto teams and put into a head to head competition of who could solve the most riddles, determine the best strategy, and complete as many tasks as possible around the city in 2 hours while only spending $15 max per team on travel. That budget makes getting from South Philly to the Art Museum without a few blisters quite difficult!.
Since I helped create the clues this year, I met up with some of the teams throughout the day to see how they were doing. It was a lot of:
- “Bubble tea in Chinatown? Easy! Oh wait, we were supposed to get a drink at the oldest pub in town too…is that City Tavern? Or McGillin’s? And what about this ‘Go here, go there, go everywhere’ clue? It makes no sense! And do we reeeeeally have to stick to this $15 travel budget? Come onnnnnnnnn…” (Yes, they really were that whiney sounding – the sound of actuaries with their plans thwarted).
Hundreds of blocks, uncountable amounts of pictures, a handful of ridiculous outfits, a pair of puppies, and a couple of cheesesteaks later, we all met up at one of our favorite bars in town to tally up the points, declare the winners, and have some well-deserved drinks after trekking around the city all day (make sure you’re on time or else points are docked!). We actually ended up with a tie between two teams who had very different strategies and the ultimate decider was which team was wackiest when told to put together an outfit at Macy’s (every point counts!).
It is days like these that remind me how much I love summer in Philadelphia and all that the AEDP has going on during it. I interned here myself back in 2011 and still count it as quite possibly the best summer of my life. Since then it’s always been my personal goal to pass that on to each intern class after me.
