What is the Operations Leadership Program?

The Operations Leadership Program (OLP) is a development program of associates and alumni rotating through various roles and functions throughout Cigna. Over the course of approximately five years, OLP associates complete three rotations lasting approximately 18 months each. While associates will not complete identical rotations, all associates will graduate the program with a range of applicable business knowledge based on completion of the OLP Experience Portfolio. Our business focus is mainly within Service Operations, but we have associates and alumni supporting other departments including Pharmacy, Total Health & Network, Group Insurance (Life, Disability & Accident), and Global Health Benefits.

What are "operations" roles?

"Operations" refers to roles within service channels that directly affect the customer, client, or healthcare professional experience. The OLP develops high potential individuals in order to shape the future leaders of the company, specific to our operational functions. Associates within the OLP complete three rotations designed to provide cross-functional exposure to operations within different business units and geographical locations.

OLP rotations will be designed for associates to give you exposure to experiences with both project management and team management. Between the two experiences and completing the OLP Experience portfolio, associates will develop skill sets in competencies such as:

  • People Management
  • Improvement and Delivery - Project Management
  • Core Operations Experience
  • Client/Customer/Health Care Provider Experience
  • Vendor Management
  • Data Analysis
  • Problem Solving
  • Organizational Agility
  • Customer Centricity
  • Relationship Building
  • Conflict Management
  • Motivating Others
Where are the locations?

OLP associates usually rotate between our nationwide service centers:

  • Bloomfield, CT (World Headquarters)
  • Chattanooga, TN
  • Denver, CO
  • Eden Prairie, MN
  • Glendale, CA
  • Philadelphia, PA
  • Phoenix, AZ
  • Pittsburgh, PA
  • Plano, TX
  • Scranton, PA
  • St. Louis, MO
  • Wilmington, DE (Global Health Headquarters)
How does the rotation process work?

Associates receive their first operations-based rotation assignment when training is completed. Cigna and the OLP will guide and support the relocation, transition, and integration into this new role and location. Each rotation usually lasts 18 months, based on role type and responsibility. Backed by our program-led monthly huddle sessions, mentorship alignment, and annual training, new associates will receive a rich experience throughout the tenure of their rotation. Upon reaching the end of their first role, associates are encouraged, with the support and guidance of the OLP Program Manager, to drive their second and third rotations based on personal and professional interest and skill, choosing roles that fit in the OLP Experience portfolio.

At the end of the third rotation, associates will graduate from the program receiving recognition for their completion of the three roles, workgroup participation, and general program contribution.

What kind of training does the OLP offer?

When hired into the program, new hires will participate in a training session for several weeks to learn about Cigna's corporate culture, business segments, and general operations.

Associates will be challenged as they work alongside their peers and other leadership development associates to learn the intricate inner working of the organization. Associates will travel to several service sites around the country to gain an in-depth view of Cigna's operations as well as a deeper insight into how the different segments and departments support the greater business. Associates will be given numerous tasks and assignments to exercise their new skill sets and offer exposure through networking opportunities with local alumni and business leads.

The program also supports annual competency training and a cross-program conference to encourage networking and continuous growth.

Additionally, if hired into the Operations Leadership Program, you will participate in annual training curriculum as you grow within your position alongside enterprise wide conference workshops. During one of your rotations, you may also have the opportunity to earn certifications such as Six Sigma Green Belt, Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM).

When is the program complete?

Associates graduate from the program when they have satisfied the requirements indicated on the OLP Experience Portfolio. This curriculum prescribes general business experiences that all associates will complete during three rotations.
