Bronchoscopy is a procedure doctors use to look at the airways
leading to the lungs. During bronchoscopy, a thin, lighted instrument
(bronchoscope) is inserted through the nose or mouth into the throat and then
into the airways leading to the lungs.
Bronchoscopy can be used to
collect samples of tissue or sputum for analysis, to check for growths (such as
tumors) in the airways and lungs, and to remove blockages in the
