According to the World Health Organization, by adopting a healthier lifestyle, more than 30% of cancer deaths could be prevented. The biggest risk factor is tobacco use. The WHO says 20% of cancer deaths worldwide are because of smoking, that number jumps to 70% when it comes to lung cancer deaths. Being overweight, having an unhealthy diet, and a lack of physical activity are among the other risk factors that can be changed. In low and middle income countries, the WHO reports up to 20% of cancer deaths are caused by viral infections such as HBV/HCV and HPV. Alcohol use and environmental factors also contribute to the number of preventable cancer deaths. According to Healthwise Incorporated, another way you can prevent cancer is by getting a check-up and undergoing necessary screenings. Practicing safer sex and getting the HPV vaccine are also suggested. Healthwise also says make sure you're avoiding chemicals and toxins such as pesticides and radon both at work and at home. You can also cut your cancer risk by exercising, staying at a healthy weight and limiting alcohol consumption.
