Problems with the fallopian tubes are a leading cause of infertility in women. Tubal blockage may be caused by:

• Past infection. This is most often a sexually transmitted infection . Sometimes it can be linked with a ruptured appendix .
• Tubal ligation or other types of surgery.
• Endometriosis . This is a common cause of infertility.
• Scarring of fallopian tubes linked with past pelvic surgery. This might have been surgery for ovarian cysts or uterine fibroids .
