This medicine is used for the following purposes:

labor contraction
end a pregnancy
bleeding after childbirth
ulcers in stomach or intestines
ulcers in stomach or intestines

Brand Name(s): Cytotec

Generic Name: Misoprostol

Instructions

Take the medicine with food.

Store at room temperature away from heat, light, and moisture. Do not keep in the bathroom.

Drink extra water while on this medicine. Adults should try to drink 6-8 cups (48 to 64 oz.) of water every day.

Do not take with antacids containing magnesium.

Tell your doctor and pharmacist about all your medicines. Include prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal medicines.

Use effective birth control to avoid pregnancy.

Cautions

Tell your doctor and pharmacist if you ever had an allergic reaction to a medicine.

Please check with your doctor before drinking alcohol while on this medicine.

Tell the doctor or pharmacist if you are pregnant, planning to be pregnant, or breastfeeding.

Do not use this medicine if you are pregnant. If you become pregnant, contact your doctor immediately.

This medicine can cause birth defects. Speak with your doctor about birth control methods that should be used while on this medicine.

This medicine can hurt a new baby in the womb. If you become pregnant while on this medicine, tell your doctor immediately. Your doctor may switch you to a different medicine.

Side Effects

The following is a list of some common side effects from this medicine. Please speak with your doctor about what you should do if you experience these or other side effects.

abdominal cramps
diarrhea
nausea
stomach upset or abdominal pain

Call your doctor or get medical help right away if you notice any of these more serious side effects:

changes in memory, mood, or thinking
confusion
dizziness
slow heartbeat
menstruation changes (missed or fewer periods)
miscarriage, premature birth, birth defects
mood changes
muscle weakness
urinating less often
cramping of the uterus or bleeding from the vagina
