Cigna Adds Gamification Challenge to Coach Calhoun's Annual Cancer Ride and Walk: Burn Calories/Burn Cancer
BLOOMFIELD, Conn., June 04, 2012 - Global health service company Cigna (NYSE:CI) is launching a new challenge as part of its annual sponsorship of the Jim Calhoun Cancer Challenge Ride and Walk: burn calories for cash to fight cancer.
Burn Calories to Burn Cancer: At the June 9, 2012 Calhoun Cancer Challenge, Cigna will provide 50 walkers with Fitbit Trackers to measure their steps, distance walked and calories burned, and then Cigna will match the walkers' total calories burned with a cash contribution of $.50 per calorie. The challenge is part of Cigna's "gamification" initiative - using electronic devices and online tools as an engaging, interesting and fun way to help people improve their health.
At this year's Calhoun Cancer Challenge, Cigna will provide 50 walkers with electronic devices to measure their steps, distance walked and calories burned, and then match the walkers' total calories burned with a cash contribution of $.50 per calorie.
Calhoun Challenge walkers can volunteer to participate in the Burn Calories/Burn Cancer initiative when they register at the event on June 9, 7:00 - 11:30 am at the Simsbury (Conn.) Performing Arts Center. Walkers who participate in the gamification challenge will be chosen on a first come / first serve basis. The Calhoun Challenge walk will follow registration, starting at 11:30 am.
"I hope our walkers can burn at least 10,000 calories - a highly attainable goal. If they do, that effort will add another $5,000 to Cigna's current generous $20,000 sponsorship contribution," said University of Connecticut men's basketball coach, Jim Calhoun. "Every calorie and every dollar counts!"
"Whether it's championship basketball or improving health, the setting of goals, providing motivation and incentives work," said Cigna President and Chief Executive, David Cordani. "Gamification is one of the recent innovations to help us measure and challenge ourselves to be the best we can be, as well as further a great cause."
This is the sixth year Cigna has participated as a lead sponsor of the Calhoun Cancer Challenge. This year, Cigna executive vice presidents Chief General Counsel Nicole Jones and Global Chief Information Officer Mark Boxer will join Cordani in leading a team of Cigna riders and walkers.
The Jim Calhoun Cancer Challenge Ride and Walk is an annual statewide event to benefit The Carole and Ray Neag Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Connecticut Health Center and Coaches vs. Cancer, a program established in 1993 by the American Cancer Society. The challenge includes choices of a 75-, 50-, 25-, or 10-mile cycling route or a 5K walk.
The event is open to everyone who wants to join Coach Calhoun in the fight against cancer.
