Cigna Employee Receives URAC 2012 Health Care Stars! Award
BLOOMFIELD, Conn., November 06, 2012 - Cigna Case Manager Thomas Button was recently honored by URAC, a leading health care accreditation and education organization, with a 2012 Health Care Stars! Award. The award is given to individuals who have demonstrated commitment to the well-being of consumers by preventing adverse health outcomes, improving lives and enhancing their sense of security.
Button has been a case manager with Cigna since 2000 and focused on assisting customers with catastrophic illness and injury. He won the Health Care Stars! Award for his work with a 54-year-old Cigna customer with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as Lou Gehrig's disease. This customer, dependent upon a ventilator, unable to move, and unable to speak, wanted to see his two daughters graduate from college, which was hours away from his home. By working and coordinating with service providers to donate the needed equipment, supplies and staff, the customer was able to accomplish the trip and watch his daughters' graduation ceremony with a front row view.
"Thomas exemplifies Cigna's mission, to improve the health, well-being and sense of security of our customers," said Jennifer Joy, operations senior director. "He put his customer first so the customer's dream could be fulfilled."
The awards were judged by a panel of health care industry experts, including URAC advisory committee members, board members and key leaders from accredited organizations. The panel reviewed all of the nominations, looking for specific accomplishments and clear results that the nominee had made a positive impact on the health of the consumers they serve.
