Cigna Medical Group Earns NCQA's Highest Level of Recognition for Patient-Centered Care
Phoenix - June 4, 2014 - All 23 Cigna Medical Group (CMG) health care centers received the highest level of Patient-Centered Medical Home™ Recognition by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) for their team approach to providing personalized medical care.
"NCQA Patient-Centered Medical Home Recognition raises the bar in defining high-quality care by emphasizing access, health information technology and coordinated care focused on patients," said NCQA President Margaret E. O'Kane. "Recognition shows that Cigna Medical Group has the tools, systems and resources to provide its patients with the right care, at the right time."
"Only ten percent of medical offices nationwide have received this designation from NCQA, and we are proud to be among these leaders," said Dr. Kevin Ellis, chief medical officer for CMG. "Most important is the result for our patients. The medical home helps to foster a partnership between our health care professionals and the individuals and families we serve with highly coordinated care that is tailored to meet their specific health care needs."
According to NCQA, research shows that patient-centered medical homes are the foundation for a health care system that provides more value by achieving higher quality, lower costs and improved patient experiences.
A medical home is made up of a team of people, led by a primary care physician, who coordinates a patient's care so the individual receives the proper care when and where they need it, including access to care after hours and online. The care team gets to know patients in long-term relationships, rather than hurried, sporadic visits and makes treatment decisions together with the patient, based on individual preferences.
The team also helps individuals and families become more engaged in their own healthy behaviors and health care, with an emphasis on wellness, preventive care, chronic condition management and health improvement. Everyone in the practice - from clinicians to front desk staff - works as a team to coordinate care from other health care professionals and community resources. This maximizes efficiency by ensuring that highly-trained clinicians are not doing tasks that other staff can do. The care team also works to avoid costly and preventable complications and emergencies by focusing on prevention and managing chronic conditions.
To earn this recognition, which is valid for three years, Cigna Medical Group demonstrated the ability to meet the program's key elements that include:
