Cigna Medical Group Recognized as Center of Excellence
Phoenix - June 20, 2014 -Cigna Medical Group (CMG) has been designated as an "Anticoagulation Center of Excellence" by the Anticoagulation Forum for meeting its standards of providing the highest level of care and achieving quality outcomes for individuals who take blood thinning medications.
CMG has four pharmacist-managed anticoagulation clinics across the Valley at the Phoenix Central, Stapley, Sun City and Superstition Springs health care centers. Antithrombotic medications, also known as blood thinners, are used to help prevent blood clots and ensure smooth blood flow. These medications significantly reduce death from heart attacks and the risk of stroke. Individuals who use them require regular and extensive medical management and monitoring to reduce their risk of excessive bleeding.
"We are so proud to be one of only 39 practices throughout the United States that have achieved this designation," said Heather Jaeger, PharmD CACP, clinical pharmacy manager for CMG. "Receiving this two-year designation is important because it demonstrates our efforts to assure that the 2,500 patients managed by our anticoagulation team each year are receiving the best possible care available."
CMG's dedicated anticoagulation team, made up of pharmacists, registered nurses and medical administrative assistants, monitors individuals who take blood thinning medications. Eighty percent of people cared for at the CMG anticoagulant centers will be on a blood thinner for the rest of their lives, for conditions including atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat), mechanical heart valves, stroke and recurrent blood clots in legs and/or lungs.
CMG received the designation after meeting specific standards in five areas of patient care, which include: drug therapy management, disease state management, transition and coordination of care, service operational performance and patient and family education.
