Cigna Named Among “Best Places to Work for LGBTQ Equality” For Eighth Year in a Row
BLOOMFIELD, Conn., Jan. 21, 2020 -- Cigna’s commitment to a diverse and inclusive workplace was recognized once again by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation (HRC), which identified the company as one of the "Best Places to Work for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) Equality" for the eighth consecutive year. Cigna also earned a perfect 100 score on the HRC's 2020 Corporate Equality Index (CEI).

This year marks the first time that Cigna and Express Scripts were evaluated together for the award. Express Scripts, a Cigna company, had previously earned the recognition as a top employer for LGBTQ equality as well. The CEI evaluates LGBTQ-related policies and practices including non-discrimination workplace protections, domestic partner benefits, transgender-inclusive health care benefits, competency programs and public engagement with the LGBTQ community.
“The impact of the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index over its 18-year history is profound. In this time, the corporate community has worked with us to adopt LGBTQ-inclusive policies, practices and benefits, establishing the Corporate Equality Index as a primary driving force for LGBTQ workplace inclusion in America and across the globe,” said HRC President Alphonso David.
“These companies know that protecting their LGBTQ employees and customers from discrimination is not just the right thing to do -- it is also the best business decision.”
An example of the company’s commitment is its employee-led Pride enterprise resource group. With the support of senior leadership, this group was created to meet the unique needs of the LGBTQ+ community, including employees, customers, clients and allies.
The group, in partnership with Cigna’s Health Equity Council, recently made transgender awareness training more broadly available to help employees serve transgender customers in a more culturally sensitive manner.
Cigna and the Cigna Foundation also support several LGBTQ non-profits including The Gay and Lesbian Medical Association (GLMA), Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN), the Hartford Gay and Lesbian Health Collective, Hetrick-Martin Institute, Mazzoni Center, Out Leadership, Out & Equal, PFLAG, Reaching Out, and Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders (SAGE).
