Cigna Recognizes Metro Nashville Public Schools for Commitment to Employee Health and Wellness

Nashville, TN October 24, 2017 Cigna has selected Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) as a winner of the annual Cigna Well-Being Award for demonstrating a strong commitment to improving employee health through a workplace wellness program.

To better meet the physical and behavioral health needs of staff and their families, MNPS placed four primary care Health Care Centers throughout Davidson County, three on school properties and one on the administrative campus in Berry Hill. Services include acute and preventive care, biometric screenings, lab tests, allergy shots, minor procedures, behavioral health care and health coaching. These four MNPS Health Care Centers, which offer low to no-cost, confidential and convenient services, are designed to serve as the "medical home" for employees.

Through a new integration with Cigna's Personal Health Team launched in January, MNPS is able to provide onsite and telephonic support and health coaching for employees dealing with issues like diabetes, weight management, pre/post hospitalization, stress reduction and other chronic conditions. Building on that momentum, in May MNPS opened its first-ever 26,000-square-foot Employee Wellness Center, located on the administrative campus, offering 8 medical treatment rooms as well as services including physical therapy, psychiatric nursing, health coaches, fitness facilities, workout classes and a café with nutritious food offerings. As a result of these initiatives, MNPS is seeing better overall employee health and lower medical costs for staff using these facilities as their medical home.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), U.S. employers lose more than $225 billion each year in productivity due to employee health problems. Cigna created the Well-Being Award to recognize employer clients that have a positive impact on the health and well-being of their workforce.

Applicants are evaluated based on the core components of their wellness program, including the goals, implementation, incentives, leadership engagement and employee participation. All applications are reviewed and judged by an internal, multi-departmental review committee from Cigna.
