We take the initiative to incorporate environmental sustainability efforts into our everyday business practices in order to make a positive difference in areas like equipment recycling, corporate travel, and reducing materials usage.
Information Technology
Making information technology (IT) systems more sustainable is essentially about energy conservation, comprehensive equipment recycling guidelines, and reducing printer paper consumption. Cigna makes every effort to adhere to these guidelines.
Some of the highlights of our efforts include:
- Virtual server technologies vastly reduce the number of servers and therefore save energy
- The Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool certifies hardware equipment standards at gold/silver levels.
- Cigna equipment disposal specifies a zero landfill policy; we remarket or recycle over 18,000 devices every year
Transportation
Increasing the efficiency of our transportation needs and mobility habits is a combination of smart fleet management and using mass transportation alternatives to cars and planes.
Recent highlights include:
- Vehicle fleet exceeds the national average fuel efficiency—the majority of our vehicles are 4-cylinder with alternative fuel (E85) capabilities, hybrid engines and partial zero emissions vehicles (PZEV)
- Mass transportation and ridesharing alternatives (through partnerships with WageWorks and Zimride) offer tax benefits to our employees
- Telecommuting—over 5,000 employees work full-time from their homes with many more telecommuting part-time or using flexible work arrangements
- Online booking and search capabilities for air and rail encourage rail transit (through our partner, CarlsonWagonlit)
- Video teleconferencing options in multiple offices reduces travel needs
Print / Paper
Working toward a paperless office means not printing documents when possible, and using recycled products (for paper and printer ink/toner).
Some highlights for the past year include:
- About 20 million paperless transactions completed on our online portals
- An electronic claim management system that handles more than 70 million claims
- Recycling over 4,000,000 pounds of office paper
- Reducing the number of directories to 3,000,000 from almost 18 million copies in 2001
- Setting all office printers to double-sided default mode
