When you're unexpectedly injured in an accident, the costs can add up quickly. A reimbursement policy can help you pay for out-of-pocket related medical expenses you incur when you suffer a covered injury in a covered accident, giving you additional financial protection when you need it the most. Benefits are payable after the deductible is met and subject to the Maximum Annual Benefit Amount.
Supplemental insurance to help protect you when the unexpected happens
Emily slipped and fell while playing tennis. The emergency room x-ray confirmed a broken ankle, which would require surgery, and being out of work for a while to recover. Personal accident expense insurance can help Emily with some of her out-of-pocket costs associated with her covered injury, such as accident related medical expenses that aren’t covered by her primary health insurance, as well as to help pay for everyday expenses – which can add up quickly.

How can an Accident Expense Insurance policy help me?
No one wants to think about accidents, but when they happen, it's important to be prepared.
If you are injured in a covered accident, an Accident Expense Insurance policy helps provide additional financial protection you while you recover.
What is needed to get the benefits?
To take advantage of the benefits, you must:
- Seek treatment for your covered accidental injury within seven days of the injury.
- Meet the annual deductible amount you selected.
After these two requirements are met, your covered expenses can be covered, not to exceed the maximum annual benefit amount you selected. Your annual benefit amount resets every calendar year.
How does it work?
Our policies are flexible and can be tailored to your needs and budget.
- For a cost-effective monthly premium, you select a base policy with a maximum annual benefit amount* of $2,500 to $25,000.4
- Choose a deductible. The deductible is the dollar amount that you must pay in full each calendar year before any benefits are payable.
- Policies can be issued from ages from birth to age 74 and can include coverage for you, your spouse and other family members.*
- You can choose to add more benefits for an additional premium, such as a Parent Rider to give a parent access to the same benefits, and other riders for specific situations.5
- Every calendar year, your maximum annual benefit amount resets.
- Your policy is Guaranteed Renewable to age 80.6
- You may be eligible for up to a 10% discount on an Accident Expense Insurance Policy if you have a qualifying medical plan or Medicare Supplement insurance policy with Cigna.7
*Benefit amounts, issue ages and rates vary by state; please contact your broker or Cigna representative for details.
How can the money be spent?
How you use the cash benefit is up to you. We pay directly to you, or your designee, to use any way you like, regardless of your medical benefits. The reimbursed expenses may be used for:
- Out-of-pocket accident related medical expenses such as deductibles and copays for primary care visits and physical therapy
- Every day expenses such as transportation, lawn care and child care.3
